Three Critical Participatory Inquiry Methods: Ripples of Change, Priority Card Sorting, and Force Field Analysis

Abstract

This session offers demonstrations of three participatory research tools highlighted in a forthcoming textbook, “Critical Participatory Inquiry: An interdisciplinary introduction” (Sage Publishing, 2023), authored by this session’s three presenters. Critical Participatory Inquiry, or CPI, is an epistemology or “an ethical stand” toward knowledge built on epistemological commitments to democratization, participation, and transformation. It is rooted in Freire’s (1970) emancipatory pedagogy, which rejects dominant positivist paradigms and centers the knowledge of “the rebel, the heretical, the indigenous, and the common folk” (Fals-Borda, 2001, p. 28). The textbook authors will engage audience members in this session, demonstrating three tools that can be used as part of a CPI approach: Ripples of Change, Priority Card Sorting, and Force Field Analysis.
