Session Summary

Racial Justice in Educational Assessment

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Northwestern/Ohio State

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Truth for too long in the educational measurement and assessment communities has been narrowly defined by those in the majority and those in power without consideration for the consequences on Black, indigenous, or other students of color. Each paper in the session contributes in some way to re-conceptualizing and pushing the boundaries of educational measurement and assessment to support racial justice in assessment. If we care about assessment justice, we must also care about and directly address the way that race functions in assessment. Presentations detail explicit ongoing efforts to disrupt these marginalizing practices in our assessment development processes, as well as provide a strong theoretical or conceptual framework for addressing and disrupting racial injustice in the assessment/measurement field.
