Session Summary

The Unapologetic Love of Nuanced Black Joy: Our Relationships Sustain Us

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Lobby - Level 3, Gold Coast

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This co-authored symposium shares a knowledge co-creation story that was sustained through a Black-led educator activist collectives’ decision to center Black joy and healing in conversations that imagined liberatory futures. We offer this story as an unapologetic love of nuanced Black joy, or the unabashed centering of relationships, happiness, and fulfillment in knowledge co-creation purposed to sustain liberatory acts. Through inviting participants and panelists to explore our collective and individual relationships to joy, we seek to extend, negotiate, and shift toward centering Black joy reconciliation in knowledge co-creation and its mobilization.
