Abstract

The number of dual language learners (DLLs), children who are developing two languages simultaneously, has been rapidly growing around the world. Understanding DLLs’ home and preschool language and literacy experiences helps early educators recognize these children’s unique strengths and specific needs, thereby promoting equity in early childhood education. This symposium presents findings on DLLs’ language and literacy experiences in culturally and linguistically diverse households around the globe. The objectives include: 1) providing an in-depth description of DLLs’ conventional and multimedia language and literacy experiences at home; 2) highlighting the effects of diverse family language and literacy practices on DLLs’ early language and literacy skills; and 3) revealing the interactional effects between DLLs’ home and classroom learning experiences on DLLs’ development.
