Session Type: Symposium
Using Queer theorist Martin Manalansan’s definition of mess, this symposium seeks to funk up and mobilize a new understanding of stories, values, objects, and space/time arrangements in educational leadership. As a field, educational leadership can no longer afford to categorize identity in one dimension but instead needs to come to understand the ways race, gender, sexuality, and class work together to create layered meaning (Cohen, 1997; Ferguson, 2004, 2018; Gilligan and Snider, 2018). To see the truth in education research, as this year’s AERA call asks us to consider, we must be comfortable with mess. Truth is messy.
