Session Type: Symposium
This session brings educational researchers working on Black girlhood and with Black girls into conversation with each other. Through our various research methods - including arts-based practice, speculative fiction, and youth participatory action research - we understand that Black girls are meaning-makers and truth-tellers. More specifically, we engage Black girls as experts who know a lot about the worlds that they inhabit and the worlds they want to create. In different ways, each panelist intervenes on dominant (and one-dimensional) readings of Black girls as only ever pained and suffering. Instead, each presenter shares how they prioritize the hopes, dreams, and imaginings that Black girls have.
