Session Type: Symposium
Broderick & Lavani (2017) expand upon King’s (1991) conception of dysconscious racism to examine the ways in which teacher candidates’ hold distorted understandings of ableist oppression. They posit that this dysconsciousness warps their understandings and enactments of equitable and justice- oriented pedagogies as they remain invested in pathological views of disability and dominant constructions of “normalcy.” This session brings together scholars who complicate the concept of dysconscious ableism in teacher education, reckoning with the ways it pervades systems and intersections with multiple oppressions. Papers in this session consider how teacher education can challenge dysconscious ableism and dream beyond pathology, considering the affordances and tensions of seeking to work in solidarity and joyful resistance with multiply-marginalized disabled communities.
