How School-Based Arts Programming Supports Social Emotional Learning for Elementary School Students

Abstract
In the absence of permanent and robust arts programming at schools, performing arts residencies can have powerful impacts on social emotional learning (SEL) outcomes among students. This symposium presents the results of the first year of a National Endowment for the Arts Research Lab. Authors will report on mixed methods approaches for identifying, analyzing, and understanding how arts education leads to SEL skills and growth for students, including linguistic and thematic analysis of student interviews, direct observations of connection, and change over time via student surveys. Specifically, the objectives of this session are to: 1) identify what SEL skills kids are learning from performing arts programming in schools and 2) show what SEL learning can look like over time.
