Session Type: Symposium
This symposium brings together researchers who take up a translanguaging lens on the teaching of English Language Arts (ELA). The session will provide participants with an overview of translanguaging theory, focusing particularly on how it disrupts traditional approaches to ELA and literacy teaching and deficit-oriented views of bi/multilingual learners. The session will then present four papers, each of which provides practical and epistemological insights into topics such as classroom ELA practice, learners’ perceptions of their own languaging and literacies, approaches to literacy research, and teacher education and preparation. This multi-faceted symposium aims to destabilize notions of “English” and “English teaching” and explore new ways of seeing, hearing, and educating bi/multilingual learners in these spaces.
