Session Type: Symposium
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education (STEM) education is a field that is not well defined, specifically urban STEM education is not well defined and is under-conceptualized in the literature. The socio-historical, political, and cultural context of urban communities, schools, and families, and STEM education warrant inquiry, but the convergence of these entities necessitates that we examine the ways in which they come together to limit or enhance the STEM learning experiences of students in urban schools. The panelists will share their definitions of urban STEM education to advance our understanding in ways that disrupt oppressive and deficit-based frameworks and forward a more authentic approach to broadening participation in STEM by students in urban schools and communities.
