Session Type: Symposium
We bring together findings from five separate studies, carried out over seven years in one small elementary school - Hillside (pseudonym) - as the school implemented a two-way dual language bilingual education (TWBE) program. From 2009-2016, Hillside underwent dramatic demographic shift aligned with neighborhood gentrification. Presenters entered at various times, played different and sometimes multiple roles (teacher, researcher, community organizer), had different research questions, theoretical lenses and methodological approaches. Symposium offers a theme with variations: one context, varied positionalities, varied elements of the “truth” of Hillside’s story. Implications are consequential for schools facing similar dynamics, for researchers and practitioners collaborating over time, and for all interested in working toward transformational education for racialized bilinguals in TWBE.
