Practice and Positionality: Critical Instantiations of STEAM Education and Research

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, Chicago, Floor: 1st Floor, Atlantic E

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Much of the attention regarding equity in K-12 educational research has focused on how positionality impacts the truths found in research, potentially reinforcing dominant discourses. This poster session seeks to explore positionality when researchers are embedded in learning communities and cultures as practitioner-members, especially in integrated STEAM domains that bring diverse disciplinary perspectives into contact. Presentations focus on three aspects of research positionality: (1) what critical positionality looks like for community-embedded researchers, (2) opportunities in the STEAM landscape to interrogate structures of discourse and power, and (3) equity-driven research practices in STEAM that acknowledge subjectivity and social dimensions of knowledge generation. The discussion will focus on how community-embedded research can contribute to more inclusive STEAM curricula, discourses and paradigms.
