Thu, May 4, 2:30 to 4:00pm CDT (2:30 to 4:00pm CDT), Division G Virtual Sessions, Division G - Social Context of Education Virtual Session Room

Session Type: Virtual Symposium

Abstract

Diverse learning communities provide Latinx students with cultural strengths and knowledge instrumental to their success in educational contexts. Yet, these learning experiences often go unacknowledged in educational research. This session focuses on intricate and collaborative Latinx learning communities to highlight how cultural strengths and knowledge positively impact these students’ educational motivation, attainment, and success. Using critical strengths-based approaches, our five papers examine how Latinx students utilize their cultural assets gained by participating in family endeavors, cultural practices, student of color-community building, and ethnoracial social media contexts to transform their educational trajectories. Our findings, centered on our participants’ voices and lived experiences, recommend that institutions create more inclusive practices and policies by recognizing and affirming Latinx students’ cultural strengths and knowledge.
