Literature and History as Pathways for Wrestling With Complexities

Abstract

This symposium interrogates how studies of literature and history can engage students’ in interrogating conundrums of the human experience and drawing upon their own senses of identity, wrestling with questions of their own truths, about themselves, of their lives with others, and about the world. Understanding our own and others’ vulnerabilities is essential to making human connections, a disposition much needed in our on-going contestations.

These studies address cognitive, social, emotional and identity development in the contexts of the study of literature and history. They contribute to the conference theme as they involve students’ learning to engage in the complex pursuit of consequential truths, informed by foundational complex understandings of the Science of Human Learning and Development supporting wholistic development.
