Abstract
School choice policies have seen yet another resurgence in the past two years, driven, in part, by the COVID-19 pandemic and the backlash to recent movements for racial justice. As the literature on school choice expands, there is a need to move beyond studies that document narrow impacts of various choice policies, to understand the mechanisms, conditions, and interactions that drive varied outcomes, and how choice operates in the context of significant and widening structural inequity. This session brings together a set of five papers that take new and novel perspectives on longstanding questions in school choice regarding parental choice, competition between schools, regulation of choice, and equity across contexts, including Detroit, Michigan; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Arizona state.
