Against Mundane White Supremacy: Revealing the Affective, Relational, and Spatial Dynamics of Everyday Racism

Abstract

This session analyzes the ways that white supremacy shows up in mundane educational contexts. Specifically, it looks at the ways that white supremacy - and resistance to it - extends from the everyday affective, relational, and spatial dynamics of education. Drawing upon Black spatial thought, theories of white emotionality, racialization of space, and phenomenology of racial embodiment, this session presents new ways of understanding how race impacts everyday educational experiences. In turn, this session presents a constellation of strategies for working against mundane white supremacy and pathways for creating liberatory educational spaces.
