Educators and researchers believe that a sense of belonging is an essential factor for students’ motivation, well-being, and achievement. Yet, there is a surprising lack of clarity regarding the theoretical and empirical interconnections between belonging and motivation in the field of educational psychology. Through five rigorous studies spanning middle school to postsecondary education and an interactive panel discussion among applied, community-engaged, and psychological researchers, we aim to achieve three goals for advancing knowledge on school belonging: (a) clarify how belonging is situated within various motivational frameworks; (b) explore how belonging is contextually-based at individual, school, and structural levels; (c) generate practical ways to foster opportunities to belong, particularly for marginalized students and Students of Color.
