Equity and Social Justice in Science and Engineering Education in Bilingual and Dual-Language Education

Abstract

According to a recent National Academies report on science and engineering (S&E) education (2022), addressing justice in S&E includes not only broadening the participation of underrepresented groups, but also confronting the root cause of underrepresentation: systemic oppression. In this symposium we will disseminate examples of research projects across the United States that center equity and/ or social justice for S&E learning in Dual Language Bilingual Education programs. With projects ranging from Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, California, and Texas, our goal is to argue that BDL programs that center equity and social justice can potentially remove barriers for students classified as ELs to participate in S&E fields and confront systemic oppression.
