Understanding Individual and Contextual Predictors of Students' STEM Major Intention and Promoting Diversity in STEM

Abstract
This interactive panel is designed as a forum for discussing present understanding about what predict students' STEM major intention and persistence. Papers 1 and 2 focus on how individual and contextual factors (e.g., interest-stereotypes, perceptions of class instruction) predict students’ STEM motivation and intentions to major in STEM. Paper 3 examines the developmental trajectory of high-school students’ STEM-intention over time and factors associated with the developmental trajectory. Paper 4 studies how undergraduate students of color persist in their science or engineering major while on academic probation. Paper 5 investigates the effects of peer-cohort Interventions for underrepresented college students in STEM. Overall, this symposium aims to contribute knowledge regarding students’ STEM intention and discuss educational implications of the presented research.
