Digging in the Soil: Bringing Light to the Invisible

Abstract

Youth participatory action research (YPAR) and other critical approaches to working with youth and their communities attempt to center the those historically underrepresented and misinterpreted. Knowledge constructed by those in the margins must be treated as equivalent to traditional knowledge and hold the same level of value when determining what is true about educational injustices. Focusing on the relational aspects of critical community engagement provides a path for equitable outcomes in educational research - such work will be referred to as Soil Work (SW). SW is a focus on invisibilized labor in educational research necessary for YPAR and other critical approaches to establish and sustain humanizing relationships that are healing-centered and justice-oriented.
