DisCrit Mothering: Interrogating Consequential Education for Our Children's Lives and Humanity

Abstract

This symposium brings together a collective of mother-scholar-activists with the purpose of theorizing and exploring DisCrit mothering in U.S. and international contexts. Drawing on Disability Critical Race Theory (Annamma et al., 2013) and revolutionary mothering (Gumbs et al., 2016), session papers explore mothering beyond individual biological function, but as educational praxis and ongoing politicized action rooted in defiance and radical love for children dehumanized by intersecting oppressions (i.e., ableism, racism, linguicism, cisheteropatriarchy) in schools. We discuss the interconnected personal and political implications of DisCrit mothering amid multiple social crises (Ladson-Billings, 2021), and consider what it might mean to engage in counter-pedagogical practices that both nurture and preserve the humanity of multiply-marginalized children.
