Complexity in Motivation and Engagement Research: Evidence for Contextual Dynamic Patterns

Abstract
In recent years the field of motivation has seen calls for situated research that examines social and contextual influences on dynamic motivation processes. In parallel, the field has also seen an increased interest in complex systems approaches to research to examine stability and change in educational and psychological systems. This symposium brings together these two approaches, showcasing the results of four situated, longitudinal studies that examine dynamic patterns in motivation and engagement. The findings provide insight into the influence of context on dynamic motivation process such as motivation loss, growth trajectories, and activation patterns, demonstrating shifts in the role, strength, and direction of influence of motivation on learning. The symposium highlights the implications of these studies for theory and practice.
