Abstract

Historic investments, at the federal and state levels, are being made in community schools, schools that partner with community organizations and families to integrate a range of opportunities and supports in order to nurture student learning, development, and wellbeing. These investments forecast increased implementation of community schools across the country; as a result, education leaders must understand how to implement high-quality community schools in policy and practice. This session presents lessons learned from California, a state with a rich history of community schools implementation. It includes an overall framework for district-level implementation, case studies of community school implementation in urban and rural districts and a study of district efforts to prepare, and support teachers to be successful in community schools.
