Session Type: Symposium
Because nearly 15% of the K-12 student population are identified as having documented disabilities, and because most students with disabilities spend the preponderance of their school days in general education classrooms, one would assume that supporting these students would be a central focus of general education teacher preparation. However, the reality is that very few general educators receive more than a single course on how to support students with disabilities (Blanton, Pugach, & Boveda, 2018; Florian, 2012; National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2019).
Therefore, the objective of this session is to identify both barriers in preparing general educators to support students with disabilities as well as strategies that focus squarely on improving general educator support.
