Sanctuaries of Survivance: Healing-Centered Engagement Within Youth Participatory Action Research

Abstract

Youth participatory action research (YPAR) has increasingly risen as a liberatory approach that couples two goals: to amplify youth voice and to address injustice. However, there is insufficient research to understand how YPAR supports Latinx youth to heal from racial oppression. YPAR may serve as a sanctuary space for youth of color to cope with ethno-racial trauma via survival strategies and cultural traditions towards youth liberation. Our session explores this area by considering the relationship between YPAR and healing in the current literature and a reflection of three youth voice scholars in their individual work with Latinx youth.
