What Constitutes Teacher Noticing of Critical Events?

Fri, April 14, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Swissôtel Chicago, Floor: Event Centre, 1st Floor, Montreux 2

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher noticing – in-the-moment attention, interpretation, and decision-making - has emerged as a central topic in mathematics education research (Yığ, 2022). Noticing specific facets of classroom interactions is a core objective of teacher education (König et al., 2022). Despite extensive research, it is still unclear what makes an event noteworthy for teachers’ observation and analysis. In this symposium, we examine what teacher educators and teachers select as noteworthy for objects of inquiry and attempt to determine what defines them as critical events. We bring evidence that critical events’ definition depends on who is looking at them and for what purpose. In effect, we attempt to define common features of critical events and examine their use for different purposes in different contexts.
