Session Type: Symposium
Research suggests that schools and teachers are not meeting the needs of trans and gender expansive students. Teacher education could play an essential role in supporting teachers’ preparedness to create gender expansive and democratizing classrooms. This symposium brings together scholars with a variety of intersectional lenses and theoretical perspectives engaged in the nascent field of gender expansive and gender democratizing approaches in teaching and teacher education. We aim to not only open dialogue about our research, but also to begin to collectively build a multifaceted vision of teacher education that intersectionally enhances and expands socially-just education as gender expansive and democratizing. This timely collaborative engagement in teacher education is critical given increasing attacks on expansive gender identities in schools.
