A Homeplace in Podcasting: Holding Space for Critical Conversations in Education

Abstract

bell hooks (1990) defined “homeplace” as a space through which Black women have historically survived and resisted the oppression of “white power and control” (p.383). As a way to center Blackness, disrupt the ongoing cycle of anti-blackness in education, and interrupt the overwhelming presence of whiteness that exists within education, Author 1 and Author 2, created a homeplace for Black people in education through podcasting. This symposium seeks to conceptualize a homeplace within education (K-16 spaces); highlight the ways in which implementing [redacted] podcast has created space to address various educational topics/issues that are faced by Black people and have been addressed on the podcast; and co-develop practical recommendations for expansion of homeplaces for Black people within education.
