Abstract

This symposium examines identity from a renewed perspective to account for the collective and sociocultural developmental aspects that have so far been neglected. The symposium curates a collection of four papers focused on elucidating the contributions of Cultural Historical (CH) and Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), to the study of identity in education contexts. Designed to create the “intellectual, dialogic, and practical focus” at the heart of this year’s AERA conference, this symposium includes scholars, across fields of study, committed to advancing identity from sociocultural standpoints to better educational opportunities, and two expert discussants. The symposium will generate theoretical, methodological, and practical tools that can serve to engage identity for dismantling inequality, promoting more just educational possibilities in education.
