Abstract

Emergent bilingual (EB) students in rural areas experience raciolinguistic inequities in distinct local settings where institutional structures maintain long-held educational and social traditions (Sawyer et al., 2019). During the COVID-19 pandemic, educators, family, and community members responded to inequitable distance learning challenges by developing novel pedagogical approaches that support Ebs who are often marginalized due to racial and linguistic hierarchies (Sawyer et al.). Cultivating the instructional practices and curriculum used by teachers during the pandemic provides benefits for EB students from linguistically and culturally diverse rural communities (Colegrove, 2021). This symposium interrogates how co-constructing actionable steps that build local pedagogical knowledge empowers educators to effectively and consequentially support EBs’ academic, linguistic, cultural, and social-emotional learning over the long-term.
