Who's Telling the Story? Interrogating Narratives of Latinidad Across Geopolitical Educational Contexts

Abstract

This symposium juxtaposes different forms of narrative that explore questions of identity and place. Each scholar on this panel will present research conducted among Latinx communities across geopolitical contexts, addressing often-conflicting narratives within and across ethnoracial groups, generations, or domains (e.g., media, political events, community events, written documents). Utilizing multiple methodologies that center voice and discourse, the authors interrogate these narratives with careful consideration of power structures at play, including power dynamics inherent in academic research. Each panelist will address their positionality and methodological approach(es) to data collection, analysis, and dissemination throughout the research process. The scholarly significance of this session includes troubling narratives of and about Latinidad with respect to voice, power, geography, and political, social, and familial influences.
