Take a STAND: Advancing Student Agency, Inclusion, and Diversity in Social and Emotional Learning

Abstract

Despite the considerable momentum to promote equity in schools with social and emotional learning (SEL), the rich complexity of students’ intersectional identities remains largely unexplored in SEL, and the extent to which students with learning differences are accessing and benefiting from SEL has yet to be fully defined. This session presents evidence from a qualitative study of diverse learners during the 21-22 school year and unpacks their experiences with an evidence-based universal SEL intervention. Presentations will include findings on roadblocks students experienced, access points identified, student-led recommendations for targeted classroom adaptations for SEL, and curriculum level innovations from a mental health perspective to better support diversity, equity, and inclusion through SEL in schools.
