Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents four studies that focus on the ways in which teachers engage with social and emotional, as opposed to purely cognitive, elements of students’ experiences with political content on social media. Based on analyses of a range of data, including surveys of teachers and students and videotapes of lessons, the studies explore how teachers use social media to frame conversations about contentious issues, teachers’ and students’ engagement with lessons on social and emotional factors of social media, and the impact of lessons on students’ engagement with social media. Together, the studies provide insights into the challenges and possibilities of integrating discussion of social and emotional factors as students discuss political issues and social media posts.
