Session Type: Symposium
Science educators assume that teachers should participate in science practices in order to replicate such work with students. Yet this assumption contains a black box: If teachers have opportunities to participate in science, then they will provide more authentic science learning experiences to students. In this session, we explore the black box three ways. First, while most research about teachers’ science experiences focuses on inservice teachers, few studies have explored how and why science experiences might matter for preservice teachers (PSTs). Second, we aim to understand connections between PSTs’ science experiences and their emerging pedagogies. Third, given how science is often framed as apolitical, we explore how PSTs’ participation in science helps them create equitable and socially just classrooms.
