Assessment and Preparation of Preservice Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Questioning

Abstract

Questioning is a critical strategy for teachers to scaffold students’ learning in inquiry-oriented settings. Existing literature has been focused on open-ended questions with insufficient attention on science content knowledge embedded in questions and how they shape students’ conceptual understanding. Besides, the assessment of questioning is mainly qualitative through discourse analysis, which is unwieldy for large-scale assessment with many Pre-service Teachers (PSTs). In this workshop, I will present a quantitative instrument for the assessment of Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Questioning (PCK-Q). I will share the free-response, multiple-choice, and Likert-scale versions of the instrument and their corresponding grading rubrics, sample PST answers, and validity data. I will also introduce the procedure of developing this instrument and discuss its application in other disciplines.
