Black and Brown Immigrant Youth Constructing and Negotiating Identity in Canada and the United States

Abstract

This symposium explores how Black and Brown immigrant youth navigate their racial, ethnic, and academic identities. The three papers in this symposium focus on education research to elucidate the truth of Black and Brown immigrant youth experiences in all their complexities, poignantly addressing the AERA 2023 theme. The symposium participants recognize that immigrant youth exist between here (U.S. and Canada) and there (e.g., Nigeria, Jamaica, Bangladesh), and we highlight the challenges that surface while they live at the margins of both geographical contexts. Thus, we wonder how we might support Black and Brown immigrant youth in all their humanities to thrive in school and community contexts.
