The four papers in this symposium examine how digital practices can support children’s STEM learning in informal learning environments. Paper 1 explores how mobile apps designed with library collaborators can support parents in promoting children’s computational thinking skills at home. Paper 2 examines how creating digital artifacts (photos, videos) during an aquarium visit can extend family conversations and foster science learning. Paper 3 discusses how digital storytelling during home tinkering activities can encourage children’s engineering talk and support memory. Finally, Paper 4 investigates how a mobile augmented-reality app can support children’s understanding of scientific information during family interactions in nature. The session will include conversation about the projects, implications for educational practice, and future directions for informal STEM learning research.
