Session Type: Symposium
This symposium highlights the organizing efforts of Chicagoland educators that work to cultivate culturally and linguistically sustaining learning spaces for Latinx youth. For more than a century, Mexicans and other Latinx communities have engaged in “place-making” actions in order to make Chicago home, despite the pervasive discrimination they have experienced since their migration in the early 1900s (Arredondo, 2004; Seif, 2018). While Latinx communities in the Chicagoland area have demanded that young people receive educational opportunities to sustain their bilingualism and cultural heritage, these opportunities have not fully materialized. As the Latinx youth population grows, it is essential to document the ways in which the larger community continues to resist traditions of cultural and language erasure in schools and society.
