Session Type: Symposium
The purpose of this symposium is to bridge theory and perspectives between motivation theories focused on support for motivation and multicultural theories in education, such as culturally relevant and responsive teaching. Using diverse student samples across different developmental stages (i.e., middle school, high school, college), four papers will examine teacher instructional practices, and learning contexts broadly, using lenses that integrate motivation theory and multicultural perspectives. Overall, what these papers collectively show is that (1) despite some differences, there are many shared assumptions between motivation theories and multicultural theories, (2) motivation and multicultural theories can be integrated in research, and (3) an integrated and interdisciplinary approach provides a more complete understanding of the contexts that motivate students from diverse backgrounds.
