Although research documents the crucial role of emotions for learning, the impact of task features in triggering emotions and modulating their effects on learning is not well understood. Without understanding the role of tasks as triggers of emotions, it remains unclear how tasks should be designed to facilitate beneficial emotions and reduce maladaptive emotions. Without understanding the role of the task in modulating the effects of emotions on learning, researchers may come to erroneous conclusions about how emotions influence learning. In this interactive symposium, scholars will present data from a variety of learning settings to understand the role of task features, which is crucial for designing learning tasks, instruction, and curriculum to harness the power of emotions for promoting learning.
