Session Type: Symposium
Graduate education systems perpetuate inequity and inequality in graduate degree holders particularly through disenfranchisement of marginalized groups. Existing research has identified the transition from high school to college as key to continuing engagement of marginalized groups in STEM fields. Little research has focused on transitions into and through graduate education systems. In this session, five perspectives on transitions in engineering graduate education demonstrate the importance of inclusive structures that support students as they move from one educational system to another. The papers in this session identify problems and opportunities to improve transitions in the higher education systems which can improve persistence and success for inclusion and diversity in STEM fields.
