Session Summary

Making Teacher Education a Site for Transformation by Empowering Teacher Educators

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Swissôtel Chicago, Floor: Event Centre, 1st Floor, Montreux 3

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher educators (TEs)–those who design and/or enact pedagogical activities to facilitate preservice teacher learning during the preparation period–are key actors who can disrupt the cycle of reproducing the unjust schooling system that has been excluding minoritized students from powerful learning. This session seeks to explore ways to facilitate critical deliberation and practices among TEs in pursuit of social transformation. Four teams of TEs from seven preparation programs present their efforts to understand and empower TEs to transform practices within or across multiple preparation programs. This session directly responds to this year’s theme by showcasing “educational research that co-construct with communities agendas of consequence that have a real bearing on disrupting” the settled practices of teacher education.
