Cultural Making: Practices, Priorities, and Perspectives

Abstract

The last 10 years of research on maker education has raised awareness of the problematic homogeneity of many educational makerspaces, which often present Western perspectives through a recognizable cast of technocentric resources and projects. To reconceptualize and contextualize this work, we propose this panel session to bring together practitioners and researchers who are examining practices that pre-date or are independent of the current mainstream Maker movement. These practices can range from deeply rooted in hundreds of years of cultural heritage to contemporary practices that respond to community needs or cultural traditions. In convening this panel, we aim to foster more nuanced understandings of the varied values, priorities, and relationships to materials, processes, and collaborators that underlie diverse making practices.
