Reexamining Race-Related Stress, Trauma, and Violence: Ecological, Holistic, and Pedagogical Responses

Abstract

This panel turns to transdisciplinary research, drawing upon health sciences, to critical racial geographies, social work and psychology, to inform a new paradigm for thinking about indices of wellness and 'dis-ease' amongst urban communities and youth. The panel provides a richer basis for understanding previously underexplored questions about the additional developmental demands youth in urban settings must negotiate, including necessary pedagogical responses. The authors believe that educators must address the holistic health and well-being of communities of color, grounded in emergent critical race biopsychosocial, ‘wellness-inspired’ analysis and pedagogical research. In short, the panel strives to connect the ways young people experience myriad (social) toxicities and stress, and reflexively, the implications for critical educational praxis across varying social contexts.
