Questioning in the Margins: Centering Qualitative Methodology and Methods in Historically Marginalized Traditions

Abstract

Responding to the 2023 AERA call for researchers to engage in critical conversations to interrogate and advance research methods, we gather as junior scholars who engage in educational research in diverse contexts (e.g., community, pre-service teacher education, k-12 education) and work with individuals/communities from marginalized ability, racial, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This symposium unpacks our imperatives toward methodological liberation in qualitative research as scholars who navigate our onto-epistemologies and lives in the margins of academia and society. Specifically, through centering creativity, joy, reflexivity, and our ancestral knowledge, each of us reflects on our method(ologie)s and asks a critical methodological question. In community with our audiences, we will dialogue to cultivate methodological equity regarding ability, language, race, ethnicity, and gender.
