Session Type: Virtual Symposium
The presentations in this session use multiple theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches to investigate motivation in several STEM fields. We present data from diverse participants from a variety of ages. The talks will examine cognitions and the intersection of different social categories (ethnicity, race, gender) and how they affect students’ perceptions of ability and motivation to participate in STEM-related activities. These projects speak to efforts to understand and combat ethnic, racial, and gender underrepresentation in STEM participation and reduce current inequities by looking at both cognitive factors such as particular identities, growth versus fixed mindsets, as well as contextual factors such as teachers’ beliefs and the COVID-19 pandemic.
