Abstract

This roundtable session explores how community-based scholar-educators uphold, inhabit, and seek to transform oppressive social structures within and beyond classrooms. Pushing against universalized “best practices,” we consider the distinctive ways in which we are each positioned and implicated in community-rooted work that is always laden with possibilities and perils (Serrano et al., 2022). The purpose of our shared inquiry is to reflexively examine our attempts to grow liberatory practices and offer potential insights and lessons stemming from our place-based work. Aligning with the 2023 AERA annual theme, our roundtable explores how we might hold each other with compassion and rigor as one way to unearth truths rooted in the lives of those we seek to serve.
