Abstract

A groundswell of research and practice-based activity focuses on civic engagement and social and political literacies of youth. It aims to enhance youths’ out-of-school learning by offering a social space to engage with peers around their emerging worldviews, cultural contexts, and commitments to their social environments through active service. The three presentations in this interactive session focus on research with high school youth. They share a conceptual framing of process as co-constructed and of youth civic engagement as knowledge-building, equity and justice work, and community-focused research. Drawing on youth narratives, participants will highlight how each research program enacts the process of engagement, intergenerational learning, and identity representing their intellectual growth and their roles as social actors and agents of change.
