Using Justice-Oriented Conceptual Frameworks in Research With Boys and Men of Color

Abstract

In recent years, there has been considerable focus on boys and men of color in education. While this work has sought to address inequalities facing this group, critical scholars point to the ways research and policy have often utilized deficit frameworks that fail to critically engage with racism, power, and heteropatriarchy. This session contributes to this conversation by showcasing a range of conceptual and empirical papers that utilize justice-oriented conceptual frameworks in research with boys and men of color. Each paper utilizes or theorizes a distinct framework to offer justice-oriented perspectives, questions, and possibilities to this popular area of study. Among these frameworks are woman of color feminism, abolition, relational race frameworks, and critical carceral studies.
