A Critical Women of Color Feminist Analysis of Childcare: Histories, Contemporary Issues, and Futures

Abstract
Childcare has historically served as a source of support for families and of inequities, which have been exacerbated since the onslaught of Covid-19. In this symposium session, we share research from a preliminary study about the context of childcare in one U.S. metroplex. Seventy stakeholders, including educators, directors, and parents/caregivers, were interviewed to learn about their lived experiences with childcare. Using critical and women of color feminist theoretical perspectives, we discuss research design, overarching themes that emerged, and knowledge learned from the experiences of Latinx parents/caregivers whose dominant language is Spanish. We then share possibilities for the next phase of research that will address the complexities of inequities persisting in childcare for a range of stakeholders.
